Possible Health Risks

The skin and respiratory system are the most frequently affected by resin exposure.

Direct skin contact with uncured resin or hardener can cause irritation, such as redness, itching or sensitivity in some people.

Inhalation of fumes during the mixing and curing stages can irritate the respiratory tract, leading to symptoms like coughing, wheezing, throat discomfort, and difficulty breathing.

Sanding cured resin can releases fine dust particles into the air.

Getting resin in the eyes can be very irritating, which is why eye protection is recommended.

So How Can We Create with Resin Safely ?

Now, I know that may sound a little worrying at first, but thousands of people safely enjoy crafting with resin every day the key is simply understanding the risks and taking a few sensible precautions while you work

Skin Protection: This is a very easy one ‘Wear Gloves’ The gloves recommended for wearing with resin use are NITRILE gloves these are readily available from Amazon you can find them here 👉 https://amzlink.to/az0T3weStkjyS A little tip I always use large size gloves  I find it so much easier to pull them on and off. I would go a step further and also suggest you wear old clothes or better still a crafting apron – resin can get quite messy sometimes.

Eye Protection: I have these safety glasses  I can wear over my prescribed glasses quite comfortably or you could use a ‘FULL FACE’ respirator (see respirators below)

Inhalation of Fumes: First, you need good ventilation, this can be simply opening a window or door, my work table is set up right beside the window (good for natural light ) I always open my window whilst working with resin UV or Epoxy.

Good Ventilation - opening a window when crafting with resin

Air Purification : For extra peace of mind I also use an Air Purifier that I have set up on my work table, always turned on whilst crafting with UV resin and with Epoxy resin after I have poured my resin and I am leaving the room I leave my air purifier on (set on the built in timer)  for an hour or so with my craft room door closed to reduce the vapours escaping into the rest of my home and to continue removing any airborne dust from the air as my pieces start to cure, uncured resin is when extra care is most important.

Respirator Masks:

I like to use a half face mask here you can see the exact one I use here on Amazon

But you may prefer to have a full face mask and here is an example for you to see

When buying a respirator mask you need to ensure that it is intended for use with chemicals and follow the instructions for a correct fit.

Resin is a wonderful and creative craft to work with; I am sure you will enjoy it. However, Resin does deserve respect so always follow safety advice and manufacturer instructions while crafting by taking a few sensible precautions you can enjoy creating with resin safely and confidently.

Last Little Tip

Always keep plenty of wet wipes or paper towels nearby to quickly clean up any spills while working.
